February 17, 2011
Pulaski, VA, February 17, 2011 – LewisGale Hospital at Pulaski recently received a prestigious award from the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce – The Business Excellence Award. The hospital was recognized for consistently exceeding patient expectations and repeatedly achieving high rankings on quality scores.
When presenting the award, Wayne Carpenter of Pulaski Baseball, last year's winner, stated, “The winner of this award is community–minded and a solid example of what can be achieved when commitment is coupled with hard work and direction.”
Carpenter pointed out that LewisGale Hospital at Pulaski consistently scores in the 90th percentile in Core Measures, quality indicators determined by the government, which include heart attack care, heart failure care, pneumonia care, and surgical care and infection prevention. Out of 67 Virginia hospitals, Anthem ranked LewisGale Hospital at Pulaski number four for its commitment to high quality care and patient satisfaction scores.
The chamber also awarded Mark Nichols, the CEO of the hospital, with the Business Executive of the Year Award.
“Under his leadership, the hospital is a great corporate citizen of the community, offering monetary and in–kind contributions to a variety of worthy causes which help to make Pulaski County an even better place to live, work and play,” said Peter Huber, Pulaski County Administrator and last year's winner, as he presented the award to Nichols.
Huber stated that while Nichols had only lived in Pulaski County for a relatively short time, he was already one of the most familiar faces in the area.
Under Nichols' leadership, the hospital has experienced several major accomplishments including the addition of a $3.5 million linear accelerator and other equipment to upgrade the services offered at the LewisGale Regional Cancer Center at Pulaski.
“I consider it a privilege and an honor to receive these two awards,” said Nichols. “I applaud our employees and the hospital's medical staff for going above and beyond to ensure our patients always receive high quality, compassionate care. We are part of the Pulaski Community in every way, and will continue to do our part to make it one of the best places to live in the New River Valley.”
